The cartoons of Chari Pere, a School of Visual Arts graduate, who debuted her Jewish humor calendar, “A Yearly Shpritz of Jewish Bits: The Ultimate Illustrated Calendar of Jewish Jokes (Old and New).” Pere co-organized the show and designed the event’s colorful posters and postcards. A celebration of Jewish artwork on the West Side By Jefferson Siegel Crowds poured into the West Side Jewish Center at W. 34th Street near 9th Ave. on Wednesday, and not because of an upsurge in religious fervor. The draw this night was the first annual Jewish Artist Fest, featuring a variety of works by Jewish artists living in and around New York City. Twenty artists came to display their paintings, photographs, calligraphy, cartoons, scultptures woodcrafts and clothing for the one-night-only event. Exhibitors and guests included Chelsea painters Eva Deutsch Costabel and Rachel M. Mintz, as well as the woodwork of Bob Richter and works by Leah Raub, Aliza Donath, Sara Levit, RMR Judaica and co-organizer Chari Pere. In addition to the visual artists, attendees also enjoyed the music of Meir Simcha Weinberger. |
