Jewel missing
An employee of Phillips de Pury & Co., the auction house at 450 W. 15th St., told police on April 24 that a ring, valued at $280.000 and described only as “a gray ring with green and white stones,” was discovered missing from the company safe at 10:30 a.m. Thurs., April 17. The safe was not damaged and the ring was last seen in the safe the day before, according to police. Only six employees had the combination to the safe; two of them were in London, and one was on vacation when the ring was discovered missing, according to police reports.
Gallery theft
An employee of Caelum Gallery, 526 W. 26th St., told police that a painting valued at $7,000, wrapped and ready for shipment, was placed on the gallery floor at 2 p.m. Sun., April 20 but was missing at 5 p.m.
Hit and run
A motorist driving north on Eighth Ave. at 3:30 a.m. Sat., April 26 was hit from behind by another vehicle, which drove off without stopping. The victim suffered back pains, and police discovered a New Jersey license plate caught on his rear bumper.
Teens robbed
A girl, 15, walking uptown from W. 14th St. with a friend on Saturday afternoon April 16, was followed by four teenage boys who stopped them at 3:45 p.m. on W. 15th St. between Eighth and Ninth Aves., forced the victim to surrender her cell phone and fled, police said.
Assault attracts crowd
Police responded to an assault that attracted a crowd of club goers at 2:40 a.m. Fri., April 25 outside 530 W. 27th St., where several clubs are located. Police apprehended Luke Appignani, 27, for choking a woman on the sidewalk in front of the location. Appignani flailed his arms and had to be restrained before arresting officers handcuffed him. He was charged with assault, resisting arrest and possession of “a small amount of controlled substance,” police said.
Knife threat
Police arrested a Neptune, N. J. man at 5 a.m. Sun., April 27 for threatening two men walking on 10th Ave. between 18th and 17th Sts. with a knife. The suspect, Mohammad Jabbar, 25, was charged with menacing. The knife was found in a car with New Jersey plates parked near the scene, police said.
Sex offense victim
A Chelsea woman, 20, told police on Sunday morning, April 26 that she had about three drinks in the Bronx during the early hours of the previous day, went to sleep in a nearby apartment, but woke up at 1:30 a.m. with her underpants down and a strange man on top of her. The victim said she did not remember the address of the apartment where she slept in the Bronx.
Construction injury
A construction worker on a building going up in the Bellevue Hospital complex on E. 29th St. was seriously injured on Tuesday morning, April 29 when he fell from the second floor of the partially completed, 15-story building to the floor below. Christopher Gunn, 25, an employee of Falcon Steel of Wilmington, Del., fell through a cutout in a corrugated steel plate and sustained head injuries. He was taken to Bellevue. Work was stopped on the project and the general contractor, Turner Construction Co., was given two citations for safety violations.
Shoplift arrests
Two women were arrested in two separate shoplifting incidents on Fri., April 25 at American Apparel, 181 Eighth Ave. near W. 19th St. Sandra Jackson, 48, was arrested at 3:45 p.m. and charged with trying to walk out without paying for eight dresses. Diana Hernandez, 22, was arrested at 8:34 p.m. for stealing unspecified merchandise.
