Open House for the High Line

As part of this weekend’s Open House New York event, Friends of the High Line gave tours of the northern section of the elevated railway, which loops around the Hudson Rail Yards and had previously remained unseen by the public, given its uncertain future. The loop, which the city has yet to purchase from CSX Transportation, is in danger of demolition as proposals for the massive Hudson Yards development get underway. Not surprisingly, the tours drew significant interest, with some 800 people chosen for the two-days of sightseeing from a pool of 5,000 applicants. Clockwise from top left: a view of the Long Island Railroad cars populating the Western Railyards; one of the weekend’s many tours works its way east toward the end of the loop; the northernmost part of section two of the High Line (where it meets the loop), which runs from 20th to 30th Streets between 10th and 11th Avenues, cleared and graded and ready for construction; original railroad rails from section two of the High Line, marked by their original location (27/28 denotes between 27th and 28th Streets)
