A Surge of Protesters Responds to Bush’s Plan

The day after President Bush, in a televised address, called for sending a “surge” of 21,500 more troops to Iraq, numerous protests were held nationwide to criticize the plan. In Times Square last Thursday night, several hundred people gathered on the island in front of the Armed Forces Recruiting station to protest the announcement. Clockwise from top left: Elizabeth Oram, who works in Chelsea, registers her protest to Bush’s troop-increase plan by tying together war and racism; Gary Pendrick of Hoboken, N.J., gives the double-peace sign in front of the ABC News studio in Times Square; Gary Lambert of Hell’s Kitchen takes an unequivocal stance on Bush’s “surge” proposal with his “No More War” sign; a group of female protesters call on Bush to reverse course in Iraq.
