Each ribbon a life
The wrought-iron fence around Marble Collegiate Church on W. 29th St. and Fifth Ave. is covered in ribbons. They first appeared Sun., March 19, the third anniversary of the Iraq War’s start. Gold ribbons represent the church’s prayers for families and friends of the now more than 3,000 U.S. soldiers killed in the war; white tags bear each slain soldier’s name, rank and age. Blue ribbons represent prayers for Iraqis killed and wounded. Green ribbons represent the church’s prayers for peace. A statement hanging outside the church reads, “We pray for the day that war is no longer an option.”
