Santa comes to the Fulton Houses
Neighborhood parents and their children turned out for a Christmas tree lighting at the Robert Fulton Houses in Chelsea on Wednesday. As holiday music played from a loudspeaker, Santa arrived, pushed on a sleigh by staffers from the nearby General Theological Seminary, and was quickly mobbed by the kids, above. The seminary also brought gifts, both from the seminary and donated by locals. Each child at the event had an opportunity to sit on Santa’s lap and tell him what he or she wanted for Christmas. The most frequently requested gift of the evening was a cell phone. Inside a nearby building, the New York City Housing Authority served coffee, hot cider and cookies. The event was also intended to foster racial harmony in the wake of the police shooting of Sean Bell.
