The Buzz
Helicopter buzz: The 30th St. Heliport on the Chelsea waterfront had its 50th anniversary on Sept. 27, according to a spokesperson for the Trenk family, operators of the port for the past 25 years. The heliport, which operates 24 hours seven days a week, handles more than 100 takeoffs and landings per day. Businessmen and government officials use the port for quick flights to airports and other nearby locations. Sightseeing helicopters, police and military craft and media reporters also use it. The Trenk family will host a public silver anniversary reception at the heliport from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Wed. Oct. 4.
Hot-dog dishing: If you want to know the inside story on the Chelsea club scene, just talk to the hot dog vendors. One vendor and his assistant on 27th St. on Saturday night said they’ve seen plenty of underage kids clubbing there, often slipping bouncers $20 bills to get in. But since the Police Department has now come in with a heavy presence, these too-young clubbers have migrated southward to the club strip on 21st St. between Fifth and Sixth Aves., the vendor said. “There’s always drugs and illegal activity and underage kids. N.Y.P.D. focuses on one area only...here...and kids go elsewhere,” he said. “N.Y.P.D. needs to focus on all areas.” His assistant said the scene up on 27th St. has hardly died down, despite the new police presence.
