Ranard’s Picture Show for Chelsea Now
Lights! Camera! Action!
Filmmakers Sharon Greytak, left, and Barbara Hammer were at the Chelsea Hotel on Sept. 21 for the unveiling of a new plaque honoring Academy Award-winning filmmaker and former Chelsea Hotel resident Shirley Clarke. A dancer turned groundbreaking filmmaker, Clarke died in 1997. Hammer, who has been making films since the early 1970s, was also honored with the first Shirley Clarke Award. Hammer’s films include “Dyketactics” (1974), “Nitrate Kisses” (1992), “Tender Fictions” (1995) and “Resisting Paradise” (2003), the latter which delves into the question of art and war. Greytak, a screenwriter, producer and director, works from her wheelchair. Her recent film “Losing It” (2001) interviews people from around the world who challenge their physical and social limitations.
